Systema Massage

One of the most important aspects of Systema is massage. Vladimir Vasiliev and Michael Ryabko insist that Systema massage is critical to proper training. Like all types of massage, Systema massage relaxes your mind and body. With its unique methods, it provides both long and short term health benefits for the giver and the receiver of the massage.

Systema massage is always done with a partner. During the training, participants learn how to spot tension in their partner’s body. A typical Systema massage might include one partner walking on top of the other with his hands or feet. The person being massaged learns to focus on gradually relaxing despite the discomfort. Both the giver and the receiver benefit as the masseuse practices relaxing his own body in an effort to relax his partner. As often discussed by Vladimir Vasiliev and Michael Ryabko, Systema is all about engaging the mind as well as the body.

Watching a session of Systema massage reveals exactly how different it is from the typical massage you might see in a spa. In therapeutic Systema massage, special types of wooden rods and other distinctive tools are used as part of a stress redistribution method, which allows your body to go into a deeper state of relaxation and restore itself.

During a typical Systema massage session, the masseuse will walk from his partner’s calves up to his neck. The process of relaxation will transform the massage from what could be a punishment into a lesson on physical and mental restoration. By focusing on their breathing and the elimination of tension, both partners can relax their minds and bodies. Successfully fighting the urge to physically resist will ultimately create greater physical comfort and a stronger, more peaceful mind. Similar to the benefits seen in mediation, Systema massage can have a positive effect on every aspect of your health. By focusing your mind on relaxation, you can gradually teach yourself to reach progressively deeper states of relaxation. This increased relaxation is coupled with increased self-control, which work together to create the foundation of good health.

Vladimir Vasiliev and Michael Ryabko’s mantra “poznaj sebya” (discover yourself) is a vital piece of Systema massage. One standard part of the massage requires the masseuse to put a quarter of his weight on his partner’s neck. Through deeper understanding and focus, both partners can relax through this otherwise stressful situation. The often nerve-racking nature of Systema massage puts its practitioners into an ideal situation to establish a more complete understanding of themselves as well as their partners.

In everyday life, people tend to get caught up in the quest for immediate gratification and comfort. Needless to say, this can create a wide a range of health problems. Through Systema massage, practitioners can not only find relaxation but develop habits and practices to use for improving their immediate health as well as making long-term improvements for their minds and bodies.
